End of Season

These are the last shots of the garden for the 2009 Season. The garden is now ready for snow.
From top to bottom:
-One of three bulk containment areas for leaves. In the foreground you can see part of the leeks that are being left in the ground over the Winter.
-Remaining leeks. These have been re-mulched and will spend the Winter, the hope being they will be useable in the Spring.
-One section of blueberries with a fresh layer of pine needle mulch.
-View of one mulched area. This is where the beans were this year.
-Asparagus patch in the background. The patch has been fertilized with Pro-Gro organic fertilizer, coated with wood ashes and then covered with leaves.
-Northwest section of the garden with another bulk containment area for leaves. The tilled ground has been planted to winter rye as cover crop.
-Between the bags on the left and the string on the right is a new area prepared for next year. The area has been coated with shredded leaves.
-Another view of the northwest corner of the garden, this one looking southeast.
-On the right is one of two sections of garlic planted in November. This area has been coated with straw that came from a cover crop of oats. You can see the remains of the oats in the upper left of the picture.
-View of access route to the northeast corner of the garden. The remnants of the oats cover crop are visible in the upper middle of the picture.

Panoramic View November 2009

Here are two shots showing a panoramic view of the garden. That's Waite's house in the background.
You have to look closely, but you can see the bags of leaves. They're pretty small in these pictures.
The blue barrels are used for weeds. They're 55-gallon drums. The weeds go in, but they don't get out.

Annual Gathering of Leaves 2009

Here are some pictures of Waite's leaf-gathering efforts in 2009. The pictures were taken the 27th of October.
From the top down:
-The pile of bags to the right will be staged around the garden for easier access in next year's garden. They will also be placed in areas to suppress emergence of weeds in the Spring. You can see some green leeks still in the ground.
-Here is a bulk containment area. It has chicken wire on the sides and bags of leaves at each end. Waite has 5 or 6 containment areas located throughout the garden.
-This is a sub-section of Waite's garden with bags of leaves around the perimeter. This is the area where he had beans last year.
-This is a general view of the northwest part of the garden. You can see that the oats (planted as a cover crop) are still green. Waite will cut them down and use the resulting straw for mulch on his garlic bed.
-Here is a picture showing the placement of bags of leaves and a couple of beds enclosed with cedar boards.
-Here is another picture of the bags piled as Waite delivers them to the field. These will be placed around the garden, not left in this large pile.
